Is the mercury in dental fillings lethal to humans?
There has been a lot of hype about the mercury in amalgam (silver) fillings over the years. Amalgam fillings are made up of about 50% mercury and the rest is made up of different metals. The evidence that mercury in fillings is harmful to humans is inclusive therefore many dentist still do these types of fillings because they tend to work better for peoples budget compared to white composite filling material and dental insurance tends to pay for amalgam fillings over white fillings.
White fillings have been becoming popular due to their esthetics. They are not noticeable unlike silver fillings. The biggest downfall for amalgam fillings is they tend to weaken the tooth causing it to break or crack which is one of the main reasons dentists have been placing more of the white fillings. If you are concerned about your own amalgam fillings and want them replaced we recommend you visit a mercury free dentist.
