Mesa Root Canal Treatment
When you say “root canal treatment”, many people reflexively cringe. It doesn’t have to be that way.
What is a root canal treatment, and why is it necessary?
A root canal treatment becomes necessary when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected. When tissues of the body become infected, they swell. Within the tooth there is no place for the swollen tissue to expand to, and the infected tissue dies.
A root canal treatment removes the infected and necrotic tissue, then seals the tooth against further infection.
Are root canal treatments painful?
Root canal treatments have an undeserved reputation as being exceptionally painful, when usually the treatment relieves the pain of a toothache. Often, the tissue is dead and no pain killer is necessary, but if you are nervous at all about the treatment, we can help ease your anxiety with nitrous oxide. Over-the-counter pain medication is often sufficient to manage pain after the treatment.
A root canal treatment removes all nutrient and blood supply to the tooth. A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment will become brittle, so it may be necessary to place a crown over the tooth to protect it.
